Recent Acquisitions: Black & White Photography

December 13, 2010 - February 27, 2011

In anticipation of the Academy Art Museum 50th anniversary in 2008, many supporters offered valuable works of art to be added to the Museum’s permanent collection. The resulting gifts led to a celebratory exhibition and an accompanying 20-page catalogue. Two years later, the museum continues to enjoy that momentum. In particular, the Museum has seen its photography collection flourish; it now contains numerous works by artists recognized on a national level.

Through works by Lisette Model, Berenice Abbot, Jill Krementz plus a mid-nineteenth century daguerreotype, the Museum has demonstrated that its holdings of black and white photography have grown recently. In particular, the daguerreotype of an anonymous couple is the first of its kind to enter the Museum’s collection.
