The Museum is fortunate in that its collection of plein air paintings pre-dates the Plein Air Easton Festival, although numerous items have been purchased since the first Festival in 2005.
Henry Chittenden Coe, born in Maryland, schooled in Virginia, became one of the
Academy Art Museum’s first curators. Stylistically, Coe works as a plein air painter in
the manner of the American and French Impressionists and conveys a distinct sense
of place familiar to those from the Eastern Shore area. While his early work reflects a
refined, more controlled brushstroke, his later work has a more painterly, expressionist
approach. Eugene “Bud” Leake was President of the Maryland Institute’s College of Art from
1961 to 1974. He was at once a quintessential Maryland landscape artist and a
visionary leader in arts higher education. Stephen Griffin, Kelly “Gavin” Brooks, Greg Johannesen and Tracy Frugoli are
all former award winners in Plein Air Easton Festivals and are represented in the
Academy Art Museum’s permanent collections.
