Patrick Henry: Ephemeral Moments

February 4 - April 1, 2012

To view a painting by Patrick Henry is to recognize a bond between the artist, the land he loves and its impact on a regional culture. It is a culture that is slowly fading with the changing landscape, leaving intimate, nostalgic and fleeting reminders of simpler times gone by.

Patrick Henry was born on Maryland's Eastern Shore and after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, he taught art classes at the local high school for two years. It was during this period that he turned to painting scenes of the area, featuring historical and symbolic images of the Eastern Shore culture and decided it was time to pursue a professional career in the arts, specifically in oil painting. To subsidize his painting career, Patrick Henry worked in masonry and maintenance positions. Slowly, as his work increased in recognition he was able to devote more time to his passion. Patrick Henry has built a reputation over several decades as a quintessential Eastern Shore painter.

The 1990s saw Patrick Henry involved with one-man and group exhibitions throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. A major mural commission at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, MD, highlighted that time period. During the next decade, Patrick Henry’s work was represented by galleries outside the Eastern Shore region. With a successful inaugural show at Main Street Gallery in Annapolis, MD, a new wave of collectors became exposed to Patrick Henry’s artwork.

In 2005, The Daily Times newspaper recognized Patrick Henry as Delmarva’s Best Local Artist. The Reginald R. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, presented Patrick L. Henry: Into the Light, in 2007. Patrick realized the achievement of a career-long dream, of having his work displayed in a museum during his life-time. In 2010, the Lewis Museum purchased his painting Berlin Milling Company, for its permanent collection. Recognition continued in 2011 as a readers poll by "Maryland Life Magazine" selected Patrick Henry as the Lower Eastern Shore's Finest Artist. Clearly, Patrick Henry’s career path has been quite unique; his talent, along with passion and his solid work ethic, have been the driving force that has allowed his work to flourish.

Patrick Henry regularly exhibits at The Globe Theater, Berlin, MD, and at Studio S, in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
