One World: The Art of Greg Mort features the paintings of Greg Mort. In 2007, David H. Hickman, an Easton-born, DC resident, donated over 30 paintings by Mort to the Museum to make it the largest public repository of the artists’ work. This exhibition draws from the Hickman gift and other prominent collections to focus on one of Mort’s most important artistic missions: raising awareness for our planet.
Largely self-taught as an artist and an amateur astronomer Mort has focused on our surroundings, incorporating his knowledge of space exploration and environmental issues. Given his talent and insight, the artist has drawn considerable attention from collectors, dealers and museums. In 1983 Mort was recruited by NASA to participate in its American Artist and the Space Shuttle program. In this first of many NASA commissions, he depicted Sally Ride’s historic STS 7 shuttle flight in a series of watercolors that have been displayed at Cape Canaveral, Florida. While delivering a lecture at the White House in 1998, Mort met the spouse of the late Dr. Carl Sagan, a noted author and scientist. As a result of that encounter, Mort received a commission for Sagan’s portrait that was acquired by the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Two paintings from his Stewardship series have been acquired by President and Mrs. Clinton and by Vice-President and Mrs. Gore. In addition to the aforementioned museums, Mort’s work can also be found in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Vatican Observatory, the Brandywine River Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum and numerous other prestigious venues.
