In 2010, Tamra Davis’ film, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, was accepted with great acclaim at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. On September 24, the Chesapeake Film Festival is bringing this definitive documentary to the Academy Art Museum. This film chronicles the meteoric rise of one of the most recognized painters of the 1980s. By 1985, the young Basquiat was closely aligned with his close friend, Andy Warhol. Unexpectedly, Warhol died two years later following complications from surgery. In 1988, Basquiat, too, would be dead from a heroine overdose. This film will examine the life and career of the short-lived Basquiat.
To complement the screening, the Academy Art Museum will display three rare drawings in the artist's self-taught style that has its roots in graffiti art. The film will be shown in the Museum's Performing Atrs space. Contact the Chesapeake Film Festival for ticket information.
