Building Blocks of the Impressionist Landscape
Oil Painting Classes January – February 2012
Diane DuBois Mullaly
Please don’t feel you have to go buy all new paint for these classes! You are welcome to use whatever traditional or water based oil paint you already own. If you prefer other colors, you may bring them, but I do insist on a limited palette similar to the seven colors above
M Graham paints were designed to paint solventless, using M Graham walnut oil medium as your medium and brush cleaner. However, I do use odorless mineral spirits as a solvent and prefer to use Gamsol by Gamblin.

Class: Plein Air for Beginners 2012 -- Oil Painting Workshop
Instructor: Diane DuBois Mullaly
Paint -- Please don’t feel you have to go buy all new paint for this workshop! You are welcome to use whatever traditional or water based oil paint you already own.
If you need to buy paint, I prefer M Graham brand (non-toxic, available at online art suppliers)
M Graham paints were designed to paint solventless, using M Graham walnut oil medium as your medium and brush cleaner. I do use a solvent and prefer to use Gamsol.
Medium – None needed
Brushes
If you have other oil painting brushes, feel free to bring them. But no tiny brushes!
Portable Easel
Bring a sturdy portable easel that is intended to be used for outdoor painting. If you are buying a new easel for this workshop, consider an inexpensive French easel. There is a good selection on eBay for $50-100 (just be sure to check the seller’s feedback before you buy). If you prefer a light weight easel that should not blow over, consider a half box French easel.
Palette -- Mijello TruColor Neutral Grey Palette - Fredi Weber (available at online art suppliers)
Trowel Shaped Palette Knife -- Creative Mark brand number T-25
Pastel Pencil -- Available at the workshop, at my cost of $1 each.
Creative Mark Wipeout Tool
Panels -- Four to six 8x10 panels or canvasboards. Recommende brands, Ampersand Gessobord flat panels, Fredrix canvasboards, Blick canvas panels, Panelli Telati canvas panels.
How to carry wet paintings – Handi Porter Wet Painting Carrier or use a pizza box
I will bring some Handi Porters to the workshop and they will be for sale at cost $4 each. If you want to save money and recycle, use empty pizza boxes to transport your wet painting.
Brush Washer -- or tank with a tight cover. You can use a glass jar with a lid that seals tight, the size of a spaghetti sauce or mayo jar.
Solvent --To clean your brushes and thin your paint:
For traditional linseed based oil paints, please bring ODORLESS Turpenoid or Gamsol.
For M Graham oils, you can use the above, or M Graham Walnut Oil Medium.
Do not bring Turpenoid Natural, it has a strong odor!
Paper Towels -- Viva brand, several rolls.
View Finder -- ViewCatcher brand viewfinder to help find a good composition. Well worth the $6-7 investment, available at any art supply store. Or you can make your own viewfinder by cutting a square or rectangle in a 5” x 6” piece of cardboard. You can also use your hands to make a viewfinder.
Trash Bags
Sketchbook and India Ink Drawing Pen -- Bring a small wirebound sketch book (5x7) and a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen, black, fine nib.
Photos for Reference -- Just in case it rains, please bring a few photos of your favorite landscapes. I promise we will paint outside if at all possible.
Bring a Hat, Sunscreen, Insect Repellant, Baby Wipes, Rain Gear, Snacks and your Camera.
Reading List
I do not expect you to read all these books before the workshop begins. Most of these are books that I own and read again and again, along with a few titles that I have read bits and pieces of and look forward to reading in full. Some are out of print and can be difficult to find.
Also Bring… an open mind, your creative spirit, and your sense of wonder. There is no pressure! Be ready to relax, get in touch with the painter inside you, think good thoughts, and have a lot of fun!
